How to choose your first ever motorcycle

If you are thinking of buying your first motorbike, then there are many things to take into consideration. Most importantly, you should be aware of the Learner Approved Motorcycle Scheme (LAMS). The provisions are different in each state, so make sure you for a search for the LAMS requirements in your state or territory.

Once you know the jurisdictional and local laws in relation to motorbike engine sizes and restrictions you should think about the following:

- budget - how much money are you willing to spend? This should be thought out in conjunction with the next point

- what will you be using the motorbike for? - exactly how often do you plan on riding the bike? Where will it be stored? Is it short distances that you will be travelling just to get to and from work or will you be cruising around in it on the weekends? Will you be wanting to take it down to your local bike race track? Answers to these questions, will most certainly then affect your budget and how much you are willing to spend.

- safety and accessories - safety is paramount when you are riding a motorbike. Unlike a car, you have nothing around you to help minimise the impact on your and you certainly don't have a seat belt. So safety is always first. But with the safety, comes costs which you need to factor in to your budget. Leather jackets are pricier than non leather jackets but they are worth the investment. And of course helmets. They are mandatory across Australia and come in all shapes and designs. The more that it covers the safer that it is. And don't forget about pants, boots, and gloves - always ride with gloves!

- Maintenance - as with any vehicle, motorcycles require maintenance. With maintenance comes costs. So make sure you factor this into your budget. You have to also consider insurance costs, registration fees and fuel...although these are usually cheaper than cars so it's a good investment nonetheless.
